Driving Licence Category A2

With us, upgrading your licence becomes child's play.

What does it cost?
Work it out!

Here's how we get you
to your licence:

Paperwork

Before you can start with theory or practice, we first need to take care of a bit of paperwork. It goes quickly, too!

1

Register with us

Before we can get started, you first need to register with our driving school. You can do this in person at our office at Lenaustraße 27 near Herrmannplatz, or simply and conveniently online.

2

First Aid Course

Every new rider must complete a first aid course. You can take it directly with us!

If you already hold an A1 licence, you don't need to take the first aid course again. However, we will still need your eye test and a new photo.

3

Registration with the Licensing Authority

You can't just get a driving licence on your own. The State Office for Civil and Regulatory Affairs (LABO) first has to approve it. It's best to submit the application directly with us — that way it goes faster too.

Our insider tip:
Take the first aid course first.

If you come to us with your completed first aid course, a biometric passport photo, and a passed eye test, we can take care of both registrations at once!

Theory

Register for the A2 upgrade before the 2-year period expires, so you don't have to retake the theory test.

Mandatory lessons combined with a top learning app for fast and easy success.

1

Mandatory Theory Lessons

After registering, you can start with theory lessons at our school right away. For the A1 licence, a total of 12 theory lessons are required if you don't already hold a licence.

2

Learning App

After registering with us, you'll get access to the ClickClickDrive learning app. It contains all the relevant topics and exam-related questions for you.

3

Theory Test

We'll clear you for the theory test once you've attended all mandatory theory lessons and your progress in the learning app is at least 90%. You'll then take the test at TÜV or Dekra depending on where you registered.

Stick with it!

Yes, the theory questions have become quite extensive by now. It's best to study a little every day in the learning app so you don't fall behind.

Whoever finishes the theory sooner also gets to the practical test sooner.

Practice

This is where the fun begins! There are, however, a few things to keep in mind.

1

Riding Lessons

When upgrading from A1 to A2, you need to complete an upgrade qualification. This consists of seven practical lessons of 90 minutes each.

For direct entry: in the regular riding lessons, you'll learn how to operate and safely handle the motorcycle. Our instructors are specially trained to teach you this with plenty of patience and feel.

For the best learning results, we usually work with double lessons of 2x45 minutes.

2

Special Drives

When upgrading from A1 to A2, there are no mandatory special drives.

Direct entry: special drives are country road drives, motorway drives, and night drives in the dark. By law, you must complete 5 country road lessons, 4 motorway drives, and at least 3 drives in darkness.

A special drive lasts 45 minutes. As a rule, we carry out 2-3 of these exercises with you back to back.

3

Practical Test

Our goal: for you to pass on your very first try! Our instructors have a lot of experience and are very good at assessing whether you're ready for the test. But we will never talk you into lessons you don't need.

We also don't want to send you off too early — who wants to take the test twice, after all?

Test dates in Berlin!?

As a small driving school, we handle it well! We put you on the waiting list early so you get your test date on time.

FAQ

A2 Licence: What Am I Allowed to Ride?

With the A2 licence, you're allowed to ride motorcycles with a maximum power output of 35 kW (48 hp). The motorcycles may have a power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.2 kW/kg. This means you can also ride larger, more powerful motorcycles, as long as they're restricted to the stated power. You're also permitted to ride light motorcycles in category A1.

How old do you have to be to go straight for A2?

To get the A2 licence directly, you must be at least 18 years old.

Restricting a motorcycle for the A2 licence?

Restricting a motorcycle's power for the A2 licence is a common practice to allow riding more powerful bikes. However, there are clear regulations for this:

A motorcycle may only be restricted for the A2 licence if its original power output does not exceed twice the permitted post-restriction power of 35 kW (48 hp), i.e. no more than 70 kW (95 hp). This means a motorcycle with an original power output of more than 95 hp may not be restricted down to the A2-compliant 48 hp.

This regulation is meant to ensure that, even after restriction, the motorcycle has an appropriate power-to-weight ratio and isn't too heavy for its reduced power, which could otherwise compromise riding safety.

When restricting power, the motorcycle's output is limited through technical modifications. There are various technical solutions for this, such as:

  • Limiting the throttle travel,
  • Modifying the engine control electronics,
  • Adjusting the intake system or the exhaust system.

Once restricted, the motorcycle must be inspected and approved by an officially recognised testing organisation such as TÜV or DEKRA. The modifications must be entered into the vehicle registration documents, and the rider must carry the corresponding certificate while riding.

It's therefore important to check before buying a motorcycle whether restricting it for the A2 licence is technically possible and legally permitted.

Is there an A2 licence without a test?

No, it's not possible to get an A2 licence without a test. The A2 licence is a standalone licence category that requires both a theory and a practical test. However, when upgrading from category A1 to A2, under certain conditions the theory test can be waived if the A1 licence was first issued no more than two years ago. The practical test, however, is required in every case, to ensure that riders have the necessary skills to safely operate motorcycles in the corresponding power category in traffic.

Can I get the A2 licence with no prior riding experience?

Yes, you can get the A2 licence even without prior experience or holding another licence category. The requirement is that you've reached the minimum age of 18. You'll then need to take both the theory and practical tests and complete all required training hours at the driving school. The training prepares you to ride motorcycles with a power output of up to 35 kW (48 hp), and once you pass the test, you're authorised to ride such motorcycles.

What needs to be true for me to get the A2 licence without a theory test?

To get the A2 licence without a theory test, you must already hold an A1 licence and have held it for at least two years. You can then obtain the A2 licence through a practical test alone, without having to retake the theory test. This rule is based on the assumption that your experience with category A1 has already given you basic knowledge and skills in handling motorised two-wheelers.

Do I need a first aid course for the A2 upgrade?

For the upgrade from an A1 licence to an A2 licence, a new first aid course is generally not required, provided you already have valid proof of a completed first aid course from when you first obtained a licence. The first aid certificate has no legally defined expiry date and therefore remains valid for all further licence categories.

When should I start A2?

You should start the A2 licence once you're at least 18 years old and already want to ride motorcycles with up to 35 kW of power. If you already hold the A1 licence and have gathered at least two years of experience, you can obtain the A2 licence through a practical test. If you don't yet have a motorcycle licence, you can start directly with A2 from age 18, which saves you time and money in the medium term, since you don't have to get A1 first.

How many horsepower is an A2 motorcycle allowed to have?

A motorcycle for the A2 licence may have a maximum power output of 35 kW (roughly 48 hp). Additionally, the power-to-weight ratio must not exceed 0.2 kW/kg.
