FAQ
From what age can I get the moped licence?
You can get the moped licence, i.e. the moped test certificate, from as young as 15.
How does the moped licence process work?
Obtaining the moped licence, officially known as the moped test certificate, works as follows:
- Registration: You register for the moped course at a driving school or a recognised training provider.
- Theory lessons: You attend a theory course, which usually consists of six double lessons.
- Learning: Alongside the theory lessons, you learn the traffic rules and the basics of safe riding.
- Theory test: After the theory course, you take a theory test. This consists of questionnaires covering traffic rules, traffic safety, and technical basics.
- Test certificate: If you pass the theory test, you receive the moped test certificate.
- Practical exercises: In some German states, practical exercises are also required, but they are not part of an exam.
With the moped test certificate, you're then allowed to ride mopeds with a design-limited top speed of up to 25 km/h.
How long does the moped licence take?
The time it takes to receive the moped test certificate can vary; it generally includes a theory course of at least six double lessons of 90 minutes each. After completing the course, you take a theory test. If you study for the test and complete the course quickly, you can often hold the certificate in your hands after just a few weeks.
What happens if you ride a moped without a licence?
If you ride a moped without the required test certificate, you commit an administrative offence. Depending on the individual case, this can result in a fine. It can also have consequences for future driving licence tests, as violations can be recorded in the Central Traffic Register. In the worst case, it can also be classed as driving without a licence, which can lead to criminal consequences.
Who is allowed to ride a moped without a licence?
In Germany, people born before 1 April 1965 are allowed to ride a moped without having to obtain a test certificate. Everyone born after this date, however, must obtain the moped test certificate in order to be allowed to ride a moped.
Which motorcycles am I allowed to ride with a moped licence?
With a moped test certificate, you're allowed to ride mopeds in Germany that meet the following criteria:
A design-limited top speed of no more than 25 km/h.
An engine displacement of no more than 50 cm³ for combustion engines.
Motorcycles that exceed these criteria may not be ridden with a moped test certificate.
Advantages of the moped licence
With the moped licence, which is actually a test certificate, you can already enjoy your freedom on two wheels from the age of 15. Especially if you live in the countryside, where buses and trains are few and far between, the moped is a great way to get around. You don't have to take any major exams for it, a theory course and a theory test are completely sufficient. The great thing about it: mopeds are not only affordable to buy, you can also save on fuel and insurance. Plus, you gain valuable road experience early on, which will help you later when getting your car driving licence. In short, the moped licence is your first step towards independence and a smart investment in your mobility.
