B196 Driving Licence
Car drivers, take note: B196 brings the freedom of motorcycling into your everyday life!
*You must have held a Class B licence for at least 5 years and be at least 25 years old. No additional test is required; you only need to complete a training course.
The following protective gear is required for motorcycle training and testing: a properly fitting motorcycle helmet, motorcycle gloves, a close-fitting motorcycle jacket (with an integrated back protector), motorcycle trousers, and motorcycle boots with ankle protection
What does it cost?
Work it out!
Here is how we help you
get your driving licence:
How it works
You can obtain the B196 endorsement by completing a training course without taking a test. There is still a little paperwork to take care of, though.
1
Register with us
Before getting started, you first need to register at our driving school. You can do this at our office at Lenaustraße 27 near Hermannplatz, or simply and conveniently online.
2
B196 training course
During the course, you will learn how to handle a 125 cc motorcycle. We will share tips and techniques for handling and riding, and give you an intensive introduction to all the basic manoeuvres taught in full motorcycle licence courses. There are also dedicated theory lessons.
3
Register the endorsement at the Bürgeramt
After receiving your training certificate from us, go to the LABO or Bürgeramt and have the B196 endorsement added to your licence by applying for a newly issued licence.
Please note: You can do this only within 12 months of completing the course!
Our top tip:
Book your Bürgeramt appointment early.
After registering with us and receiving your theory and practical training dates, you should book a Bürgeramt appointment for after your final lesson.
In Berlin, the next available appointment may be two months away, and adding the endorsement to your licence can take another two months. You are not allowed to ride during that time.
Theory
Learn what you need to know to ride on two wheels!
1
Road signs
As a new motorcyclist, there are some additional signs you need to look out for. We will explain exactly what is new for you.
2
Handling
We teach you both practically and theoretically how a two-wheeler differs from a car – from steering and parking to refuelling.
3
Special features
Motorcycles also have different maintenance intervals from cars. We give you a crash course during our theory lessons.
Protective gear is required
Invest in high-quality protective clothing. A helmet, motorcycle jacket, back protector, gloves, trousers, and boots are essential for your safety. Look for the “motorcyclist” symbol to make sure your gear meets recognised standards.
Practical training
This is where the fun begins! There are, however, a few things to keep in mind.
1
Handling the motorcycle
You will learn how to handle a motorcycle in just one or two lessons. Starting off, using the clutch, shifting gears, and pushing the bike are just a few of your new skills.
2
Basic riding manoeuvres
You will learn emergency braking, stop-and-go, swerving, and slalom, just as in regular motorcycle training. This will prepare you well for riding in traffic.
3
Road traffic
Of course, we will also ride in real traffic so you can put your new skills into practice straight away. You will learn about road surfaces and cornering.
B196 in Berlin!?
We can manage that even as a small driving school! We will get you onto a motorcycle and into theory lessons early so you can receive your certificate quickly.

“Highly recommended”
“I took the B196 course there and was completely satisfied. We did some really good motorcycle exercises that I am sure I will use in the future. The owner and staff are a great team and really lovely, and the value for money was right too. All in all, highly recommended!”

“No test anxiety!”
“You do not find places like this everywhere!!! I have completed several licence extensions at KREUZKÖLLN - VietDrive Fahrschule and the value for money is excellent. Customer service is still a top priority here, and they try to accommodate customers’ preferred appointment times as much as possible.
I can recommend them 100%!”

FAQ
What are the requirements for the B196 licence?
To qualify for the B196 licence extension, you must meet the following requirements:
1. You must be at least 25 years old.
2. You must have held a valid Class B driving licence for at least five years.
Once you meet these requirements, you must complete a special training course. It includes theory and practical training, but there is no final test. After completing the course, the B196 endorsement is added to your existing driving licence, allowing you to ride motorcycles up to 125 cc with a maximum power of 11 kW.
Adding B196 to your driving licence: what are the steps?
After successfully completing the course, your driving school will give you a certificate to submit to the responsible driving licence authority (LABO). Then book an appointment at the driving licence office or Bürgeramt to submit the required documents and certificate. You will also pay the fee for adding the endorsement. Once your application has been processed, category B196 will be added to your licence. You will either receive a sticker for your current licence or a completely new one. With the endorsement, you are authorised to ride 125 cc motorcycles with up to 11 kW of power.
As of November 2023, Berlin Bürgeramt does not offer a specific appointment type for adding the B196 extension. If you book an appointment for “applying for an extension” , the staff member will tell you that you need an appointment for a new licence. They will still carry out the correct process, though. After 6–8 weeks, you can collect your new driving licence at the Bürgeramt. Your old licence will be destroyed there at the same time.
You only need a recent passport photo, our certificate, your current ID, and your current driving licence.
Can I ride abroad with B196?
The B196 endorsement is currently valid only in Germany (as of November 2023). If you ride abroad with this extension, it may be treated as driving without a valid licence. In some countries, such as Italy, this can even result in a prison sentence. For that reason, you should not treat the B196 extension as permission to ride outside Germany.
The EU is, however, planning to extend its validity across the EU.
B196 motorcycles: what can I ride?
With the B196 licence extension, you may ride light motorcycles that meet the following criteria:
- Engine capacity of up to 125 cc
- Maximum engine power of 11 kW
- Power-to-weight ratio of no more than 0.1 kW/kg
This includes 125 cc motorcycles (also known as A1 motorcycles) and scooters, provided they meet these requirements. It does not matter whether the two-wheeler has a manual or automatic transmission. The important thing is that it meets the criteria above.
Can I upgrade from B196 to A2?
Yes and no. After obtaining the B196 extension, you can upgrade to a Class A2 driving licence, but you must complete the full training course and pass the Class A2 tests.
The B196 extension is not considered a preliminary step towards or a substitute for the Class A2 requirements. This means you still need to attend theory lessons, take practical driving lessons, and pass both the theory and practical tests for Class A2. The B196 extension does not shorten or reduce these requirements. Once you pass, you will be authorised to ride motorcycles with a power output of up to 35 kW.
How can I ride motorcycles over 15 hp with B196?
The B196 licence extension allows you to ride motorcycles with a rated power output of up to 11 kW. For combustion engines, this usually corresponds to a maximum of 15 hp. Electric motorcycles are an interesting exception: due to the specific rules on rated power, an electric motorcycle with a rated output of just 11 kW can actually reach a much higher peak output. This means you could ride electric motorcycles with 50 hp or more under B196, as long as their rated power does not exceed 11 kW. This is a deliberate step by the EU to promote electric mobility.
Can I ride a 125 cc motorcycle with a car licence?
Yes. In Germany, a Class B driving licence together with the B196 additional training allows you to ride light A1 motorcycles. This means you may ride motorcycles with a maximum engine capacity of 125 cc and maximum power of 11 kW. The B196 extension lets you ride a 125 cc motorcycle without taking a full motorcycle test.
Can I ride with a B196 certificate before the endorsement is added?
No, the B196 training certificate alone does not allow you to ride. It only proves that you have completed the required training. To ride on public roads, code 196 must be added to your driving licence. Only then is the extension officially valid and you are authorised to ride light A1 motorcycles. It is therefore important to have the endorsement added by the responsible driving licence authority.
How long does it take to ride an A1 motorcycle with a Class B licence?
To ride A1 motorcycles with a Class B licence, you need to complete a special motorcycle training course consisting of practical riding and theory lessons. If you live in Berlin, we strongly recommend booking an appointment with the Bürgeramt or Landesamt für Bürger- und Ordnungsangelegenheiten (LABO) as soon as you register at our driving school. This is important because otherwise, adding code 196 to your licence may be delayed by several months. The next available appointment is often eight weeks away, and adding the endorsement can take a further eight weeks.
Please note: Riding before the official endorsement has been added is treated as driving without a licence and can lead to severe penalties.
Can I get a motorcycle licence without a test?
In Germany, holders of a car driving licence can qualify to ride A1 motorcycles (up to 125 cc and 11 kW/15 hp) after completing at least 13.5 hours of additional training covering theory and practical riding. No additional test is required, but the endorsement must be added to the driving licence.
