How much does a driving licence cost?
The cost of a driving licence can vary considerably depending on the driving school, region and individual needs. However, there are some general costs involved in obtaining any driving licence:
Driving school basic fee
This fee covers the driving school’s general services, such as registration, administration and theory lessons.
Cost of practical driving lessons
Practical driving lessons are an essential part of driver training. The cost varies depending on how many lessons you need.
Examination fees
Fees for both the theory and practical tests are payable to the responsible testing organization.
Additional costs
These may include fees for a first-aid course, an eyesight test and passport photos, as well as additional learning materials.

FAQ
How many extra practical lessons will I need if I fail the practical test?
The number of additional practical driving lessons needed after failing the driving test is not set by law and can vary. In general, instructors recommend a few extra lessons to work on areas that need improvement before you book another test.
How many driving lessons do I need on average?
The number of lessons needed in addition to the required lessons varies greatly from person to person. It depends on factors such as learning pace, previous experience and confidence behind the wheel.
In Germany, learner drivers need an average of about 35 to 40 driving lessons, including the required lessons, to prepare for the practical test (20–30 in rural areas). However, some need more or fewer lessons. Some learners feel ready after completing the required lessons, while others need considerably more practice to drive confidently and safely in traffic.
The quality of your training and your confidence are more important than the number of lessons alone. Your instructor will help you judge when you are ready for the test.
How many times can I take the practical test?
In Germany, there is no legal limit on how many times you can register for the practical driving test. If you fail, you can register again after a waiting period, usually two weeks.

We can only speak for our own school, but we would like to introduce a useful tool: at the top of our website, you will find a calculator that gives you a rough estimate of what your licence may cost. It is a helpful way to get an initial overview of possible expenses.
However, the actual cost of your licence depends greatly on your previous experience and how quickly you feel comfortable and safe in traffic. Everyone learns differently: some learners feel ready for the test after only a few lessons, while others need more time and practice. The calculator is therefore only an initial estimate; individual factors in your training can significantly affect the total cost.
