BF17 Accompanied Driving

Accompanied driving from the age of 17 lets you drive a car before your 18th birthday, provided you are accompanied by an experienced person, so you can gain practical experience on the road at an early age.

Here’s how we’ll help you
get your driving licence:

Paperwork

Before you can start theory or practical lessons, we first need to take care of a little paperwork. It won’t take long!

1

Register with us

Before you get started, you first need to register with our driving school. You can do this at our office at Lenaustraße 27 near Herrmannplatz, or simply and conveniently online.

You can register for BF17 with us from the age of 16½. You must name 1–3 accompanying persons when you register.

2

First aid course

Every learner driver must complete a first aid course. You can take one directly with us!

You can find information and dates > on our page.

3

Registration with the citizens’ office

You can’t simply obtain a driving licence without approval. The Berlin State Office for Citizens and Regulatory Affairs (LABO) must approve it first. It’s best to submit your application directly through us; that makes things quicker.

Our top tip:
Take the first aid course first.

If you bring us your completed first aid course certificate (EHK), a biometric passport photo and proof that you have passed the eyesight test, we can take care of both registrations at once!

Theory

Compulsory lessons combined with a top learning app for quick, easy progress.

1

Compulsory theory lessons

Once you’ve registered, you can start your theory lessons with us straight away. There are 14 in total for a category B driving licence. Here you can find the dates of our theory lessons.

2

Learning app

After you register, we’ll activate the ClickClickDrive learning app for you. It contains all the relevant topics and questions for the test.

3

Theory test

We’ll authorise you to take the theory test once you’ve attended all compulsory theory lessons and your progress in the learning app has reached at least 90%. You’ll then take the test at TÜV or Dekra (depending on where you registered).

You can take the theory test no earlier than three months before your 17th birthday.

Keep at it!

Yes, the theory question bank is quite extensive these days. It’s best to study a little every day in the learning app to keep up.

Completing the theory also means you can get to your practical test sooner.

Practical lessons

Here’s where the fun begins! There are, however, a few things to bear in mind.

1

Driving lessons

In your regular driving lessons, you’ll learn how to operate and handle a car safely. Our instructors are specially trained to teach you with patience and care.

For the best learning results, we usually schedule double lessons of 2 × 45 minutes.

2

Special drives

Special drives include rural-road driving, motorway driving and night driving in the dark. By law, you must complete 5 rural-road lessons, 4 motorway drives and at least 3 night drives.

Each special drive lasts 45 minutes. We usually do 2–3 of these sessions with you in one go.

3

Practical test

Our aim is for you to pass first time! Our instructors have plenty of experience and can judge very well whether you’re ready for the test. We’ll never push you into taking lessons you don’t need.

But we don’t want to send you for your test too soon either — who wants to take it twice?

You can take the practical test no earlier than one month before your 17th birthday.

What applies to your driving entitlement?

After passing the test, you’ll receive a test certificate authorising you to drive with an accompanying person. This certificate is not a full driving licence and is valid only in Germany.

"Patient and fun."

"I can only recommend this driving school! Above all, the instructor is really lovely and relaxed, and was very patient with me whenever something didn’t go quite right while driving. She taught me so well that I now feel confident and ready to enter the world of real driving :) The theory lessons were fun too, and I was also able to take the first aid course at the school, which was very convenient."

"No more test anxiety!"

I was very pleased and can only recommend this driving school. The lessons were excellent; among other things, my instructor helped me overcome my fear of the tests and always encouraged me. The office answered questions straight away. Thank you to my instructor Beyhan and to everyone else at the school who was always there to help as quickly as possible!

Accompanied driving from 17 – your stepping stone to mobility!

Accompanied driving from the age of 17 is a fantastic way to gain driving experience early while benefiting from the experience of a trusted accompanying person.

Requirements for accompanying persons:

For this experience, you need one or more accompanying persons who meet certain criteria. They should be people you trust and should also be experienced road users. They must be at least 30 years old and have held a valid category B driving licence for at least five years. They must also drive responsibly, which includes having no more than one point on the driving fitness register. These requirements ensure that your companions have both the necessary experience and exemplary driving habits.

Receiving your full driving licence later:

One thing to bear in mind: although you’re allowed to drive a car from the age of 17, you won’t receive your full driving licence until you’re 18. Until then, your test certificate is proof that you’re entitled to drive with an accompanying person. It is valid only in Germany.

A driving licence that prepares you for everything

So make the most of accompanied driving from the age of 17. It’s a great opportunity to learn with guidance and support from experienced drivers. You’ll see how much confidence and reassurance you gain when you’re driving on your own at 18!

So, what are you waiting for? Take the first step towards your new freedom on four wheels and sign up with KREUZKÖLLN - VietDrive Fahrschule. We’ll help you master the jungle of tarmac — and not just in Berlin.

FAQs

Does passing BF17 also allow you to drive category AM vehicles?

If you successfully complete accompanied driving from the age of 17 (BF17), you may drive a car before your 18th birthday, but only when accompanied. This does not automatically entitle you to ride category AM vehicles such as mopeds or scooters. You must be at least 16 and hold an AM licence for that. Once you turn 18 and receive your full driving licence, you can also drive category AM vehicles without further tests, as this category is generally included in a category B licence.

Who can take part in accompanied driving?

You can take part in accompanied driving from the age of 17, also known as BF17, once you are at least 17. You must first pass both the theory and practical tests. After passing, you’ll receive a test certificate that entitles you to drive with an accompanying person.

When can you start accompanied driving?

You can register for accompanied driving from the age of 17 as soon as you are 16½. You may take the theory test three months before your 17th birthday and the practical test one month before it.

How many points can you have for accompanied driving?

As a learner driver taking part in accompanied driving, you must have no points on the driving fitness register in Flensburg. The same applies to your accompanying persons, who may have no more than one point.

Accompanied driving: where must the accompanying person sit?

When you drive with an accompanying person, they must always sit in the front passenger seat beside you. They need to be able to step in at any time if necessary.

Where can you drive with an accompanying person?

With the test certificate for accompanied driving, you may drive anywhere in Germany as long as a registered accompanying person is with you. Please note that accompanied driving is not valid abroad.

Accompanied driving: who can be registered as an accompanying person?

You can register people who are at least 30 years old, have held a valid driving licence for at least five years and have no more than one point on the driving fitness register. They must be named when you register for accompanied driving and listed on your test certificate.

What happens if I forget my BF17 test certificate at home?

If you forget your test certificate at home while taking part in accompanied driving from the age of 17 (BF17), it’s not ideal, but it’s not the end of the world. The certificate proves that you’re entitled to drive with an accompanying person. Legally, you may not take part in road traffic without it.

If you are stopped and cannot show your test certificate, this may be treated as driving without authorisation and could result in a fine. So remember to take your certificate with you whenever you drive.

If possible, you should turn back and collect your test certificate before continuing, to avoid problems like these. It’s always best to play it safe and carry all the necessary documents.

What happens if I have an accident during BF17 despite having an accompanying person?

If you cause an accident while taking part in accompanied driving from the age of 17 (BF17), even with an accompanying person present, the usual procedures for a road traffic accident will apply.

As the driver, you are responsible for the accident, even if you are under 18 and have an accompanying person with you. Their main role is to support you and help keep you safe, but you are responsible for the driving.

If the accident was caused by gross negligence or traffic offences, there may be legal consequences, including for learner drivers under 18.

It’s important to stay calm and act responsibly in these situations. Accidents can happen, and they are an opportunity to learn and drive more safely in future.
