New Driving Licence Rules: Why You Shouldn’t Wait Any Longer
The cost of getting a driving licence has risen significantly in recent years – many learner drivers today have to budget for several thousand euros in costs before they even take the practical test. Despite calls for relief, the current situation is that a significant price reduction isn’t expected any time soon.
📉 Reform planned – but not until later
Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) presented in mid-October 2025 key points for a reform of driver training, with the stated aim of making the path to a driving licence simpler and potentially cheaper. These include proposals such as:
- more digital learning options for theory lessons
- fewer mandatory special drives
- use of driving simulators
→ all aimed at reducing costs in the long run and modernising training.
Despite these plans, Schnieder warned that waiting for prices to fall makes little sense: even if the reform is implemented quickly, the corresponding law is unlikely to take effect before early 2027 – and even then, getting a driving licence won’t become significantly cheaper right away. Anyone wanting to start their driving licence today should therefore not wait, but start now.
🚗 Why start now?
❗ Costs won’t automatically get cheaper – Prices are still set by driving schools and depend on many factors, such as fuel and staff costs.
❗ Starting early means:
- shorter waiting times for both theory & practice
- quicker mobility and independence
- experience and routine instead of exam stress
Even though a reform is being pursued, right now the following still applies: The best time to start your driving licence is now – not at some point in the future.
🧠 In brief
👉 There are political efforts to reform how driving licences are obtained in the long run and potentially make it cheaper.
👉 Concrete relief is only expected from 2027 at the earliest, and even then, price reductions aren’t guaranteed.
👉 Anyone who starts training today gains earlier mobility and independence.
📌 Tip for learner drivers
Find out early about training options, plan realistic costs, and use proven learning methods – this can significantly boost your chances of passing both the theory and practical tests quickly.
